The freelancer’s etymology was apparently invented by Sir Walter Scott, the 19th-century poet, to refer to a medieval mercenary, a “free lance,” a knight who was not attached to any particular lord, and could be hired for a given task.

•As an international consultant, I have been managing large-scale emergency management and continuity of operations integration projects for diverse industries. My clients vary from glass and cement production facilities to textile factories, from bank and finance institutions to non-governmental organizations and from international corporations to federal and local governments. .
